Carlton Communications was formed by Michael Green in 1983, Carlton Television was set up two years later. That year they launched a take over bid for Thames, it was unsuccessful. Carlton were more successful in 1991 when they won the London Weekday franchise from 1993. Carlton had a shaky start and was regularly criticised by the ITC. However, Carlton London improved and took over Central and Westcountry franchises. Carlton eventually merged with Granada to form ITV plc in February 2004.
