TSW - Television South West (also known as Television Simply Wonderful), won the franchise to replace Westward Television in 1982. TSW bought Westward and went on air on 11th August 1981. However, they kept the on screen Westward identity until they launched at midnight New Year's Day 1982. TSW in its early years focused on not doing what the other regions were doing and bringing in unknown shows, mostly from the USA. Most notable was on Christmas Day 1982. TSW showed the movie The In Laws, the rest of the network showed Disney's The Black Hole. TSW lost their franchise to Westcountry Television as they had bid the highest amount per person in any region in the 1991 round (£10 per viewer in the region). TSW fought the decision, which went all the way to the House of Lords where their appeal was finally defeated.TSW sold the studios at Derry's Cross and gave their entire back catalogue (including Westward) to The South West Film and Television Archive.
